Engraving

Collections

The Chou collection features vases and jewelry boxes with stylized grooves reminiscent of the veins of an exotic, infinite cabbage leaf.

Ceramics are engraved or incised before firing in a painstaking, repetitive process. Patterns, symbols or scenes are delicately engraved with various tools to create these simple or complex motifs. Each unique piece reveals its captivating individual expression.

Chou vases

vase

Turned on a potter’s wheel, each stoneware vase is unique. Randomly carved into the stoneware, the incisions animate the surface with hollow patterns. These are then filled with a thick, slightly translucent glaze that brings out the lighter edges of the clay.

Cabbage boxes

Boxes

Based on the same model as vases, chou boxes are smaller versions. As jewelry or candy boxes, they are delicate little cases.

Paradise vase

One-of-a-kind vase

This ceramic vase is an original work inspired by Mariano Fortuny. It is decorated using the sgraffito technique, a method of applying layers of different colors to the surface, then delicately engraving the motifs by hand. In this way, the scratched areas reveal the color of the earth beneath, in this case darker, creating a contrast of hues and materials.

The motifs are inspired by the fabrics of Mariano Fortuny, a Spanish designer who settled in Venice at the end of the 19th century. A tribute to the floral aesthetics, arabesques and intricate scrolls of this artist’s daring and unique creations.

The precise details of the engraved motifs demonstrate the exacting mastery of this technique.
